Talking to Prensa Latina after the opening of the event the day before, at Havana’s Convention Center, the activist for the rights of African-Americans said: “there are many lessons to be learned here in Cuba that we can share.”
Asked about his country’s perspectives in terms of equality and social justice, he commented: “there is the assumption that there are efforts to confront these problems of racism in the United States”.
“There is still so much to do during and in the post-slavery era. Work must be done as we speak and communicate about these inconsolable issues of the masses, regarding education, the problems of African Americans and their status in the world”, he said.
“We have a flawed country in the Hemisphere and we still face these problems of racism, Glover added.”
As for the international conference he’s been taking part in, where he recalled Cuba’s contributions against racial discrimination, he said: “this is an important forum to discuss the truth of history”.
Glover was greeted by his followers as he occupied a seat the event’s presidency, acknowledging him for his personal involvement in the protection of the people of African descent’s rights and the preservation of their rich cultural heritage.
Besides his successful presence in Hollywood, Danny Glover has been recognized worldwide for his humanitarian work and his philanthropic efforts. Among many other noble causes, the 78-year-old artist was actively involved in the battle for the release of the Cuban Five, imprisoned in US jails.
Glover is an ambassador for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
