The incumbent was accused by a former advisor of paying congressmen in exchange for favoring the Government’s proposals in the Legislative, something that has been denied by both the President of the country and Bonilla himself.
Even though the investigation is ongoing and it is an accusation that must be corroborated by the pertinent authorities, the right-wing press takes for granted that everything happened as said by the complainant’s testimony, linked with the opposition party Centro Democrático.
Given the scandal surrounding the Minister of Finance, Petro requested his resignation, but in the same message he clarified that he was not asking for his resignation because he considered him guilty of what he was accused of, but because his political enemies wanted to “tear him to pieces”. He described him as a great colleague and honest professor and praised his performance that, as he expressed, allowed Colombia to get out of “the recession due to the over-indebtedness left by [Iván] Duque (2018-2022)”, given the situation created by the previous ruler.
