During the28th edition of the academic event, inaugurated on Monday, the students rejected the indiscriminate and warlike use of radioactive substances, which have devastating effects on the environment and human health, they said.
One of the committees at the meeting, which simulates the debates held by the UN General Assembly and other organizations of the world body, reviewed reports that reveal congenital malformations in people exposed to these radiations, and their consequences for future generations.
The young people warned about the danger of the war conflict in the Middle East and the Russian-Ukrainian war, due to the latent threat of the use of nuclear weapons, with incalculable consequences for humanity, Luciano Leyva, coordinator of Havmun 2024, said on his Instagram account.
The student forum, which was first held in 1996, made its deliberations in work committees at the University of Havana, while it will occupy areas of the National Capitol, seat of the legislature, for the final plenary sessions, on Friday.
This version of the meeting elucidates issues on technology, environment and development, directly linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), in addition to cultural and historic issues, its organizers assured.
Havmun 2024 is a unique forum where students have the opportunity to debate crucial international issues, from human rights to economic development and global security.
The university students represent the different States in matters that constitute the deliberative agenda of the meeting, focused this time on the reduction of investments in weapons, the prevention and fight against crimes that impact the environment.
