Cuban province chooses best athletes of the year

Camagüey, Cuba, Dec 4 (Prensa Latina) The most outstanding athletes in this Cuban province in 2024, the Olympic champions Carlos Albornoz (chess) and Daylin Cooper (athletics), were chosen on Wednesday at a meeting between the press and experts from the Cuban Sports Institute (INDER).

One of the most prolific regions in high performance sports in the country had on this occasion in Albornoz one of the medalists at the latest international Capablanca in Memoriam Tournament, in addition to defending the first board of the Cuban team at the World Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary.

In a serious dispute for the award for best male athlete, the chess player preceded boxer Julio César La Cruz, the standard-bearer of the Cuban delegation at the Paris 2024 games, and who also won the scepter as IBA professional world champion in the light heavyweight division last August.

In the case of individual women, Cooper managed to sneak into the semifinals of the 800-meter event in athletics at the Olympics in France, in addition to being part of the 4×100 relay in the same summer games in Paris.

In team sports, the women’s volleyball team, national champion, stood out, and Yamilena Ruiz was the outstanding local player.

This performance was enough for her to rise as the best female athlete in this section.

Indoor soccer player Cristian Cabrera, a member of the Cuban team at this year’s World Cup in Uzbekistan, was the most outstanding male athlete in team sports.

Camagüey also had one of the most outstanding parathletes in Cuba, Guillermo Martínez, a starter in the javelin throw at the Paris Paralympics in 2024.

Others who were also at the event in the French capital, such as Rosmery Almanza, Silinda Morales, in athletics, or wrestler Kevin de Armas, were also among the provnce’s outstanding athletes in the last 12 months.

It was learned on Tuesday that Robinson Poll, from Camagüey and personal trainer of Paris 2024 gold medalist Erislandy Alvarez, in the 63-kg division in boxing, was elected Cuba’s new Boxing Commissioner.
