Student forum in Cuba debates UN-related issues

Havana, Dec 3 (Prensa Latina) Students and teachers are discussing for a second day here the Havana’s United Nations Model (Havmun 2024), as part of a forum devoted to global issues.

The 28th edition of the academic event, running through December 6th at the University of Havana, has been described by its organizers as a unique space where students have the opportunity to debate crucial international issues, from human rights to economic development and global security.

This time the forum created in 1996 is dealing with technology, the environment and development, directly linked to the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), as well as cultural and historical issues, the organizers indicated.

Following in the UN steps, working committees are meeting from today, with plans to move discussions to Havana’s National Capitol (seat of the National Parliement) on Thursday and Friday

The forum simulates the debates and discussions of the bodies and organizations that make up the United Nations Organization System, with the students representing countries that usually attend debates of the world body’s agenda.

According to the national coordinator of the Model United Nations (MUN), and academic head of the initiative at the university, Luciano Leyva, the students give their opinions on the reduction of investments in weapons, the prevention and fight against crimes that affect the environment, and the consequences of atomic radiation and nuclear experiments carried out by some powers.

The meeting allows for in-depth study by university students of the characteristics, history, political situation, economic-social development, demographics, culture and other aspects of the State they will represent, explained the coordinator of Havmun 2024.
