Police seizes largest cocaine shipment in Australia’s history

Canberra, Dec 2 (Prensa Latina) The Australian Federal Police today revealed an operation that culminated with the arrest of 13 people and the seizure of 2.34 tons of cocaine, the largest shipment of that drug in the history of the country. According to a statement from the entity, the actions took place near the northeastern island of K'gari, which means Paradise in the language of the Aborigines and is known as the largest sand island in the world, with 1,630 square kilometers.

The cargo of narcotics arrived there in a recreational fishing boat that stopped and alleged mechanical failures.

When Australian authorities boarded the vessel, they found 51 packages of cocaine weighing some 40 kilograms each, with an estimated minimum overall value of over US$490 million.

The crew claimed that they had picked up the cargo from a mother ship at sea.

An operation led authorities to arrest several suspects in connection with the case over the weekend and revealed that they suspect strong links to drug trafficking mafias abroad.
