Event in Germany discusses the blockade against Cuba

Berlin, Dec 2 (Prensa Latina) German left-wing activists met in Frankfurt to discuss international law aspects of the blockade against Cuba, organizers said.

The Cuba Yes group of the Left Party organized a debate event at the traditional club Voltaire-Frankfurt am Main, under the title “Underdevelopment of the Global South by Law, economic sanctions in light of international law and human rights”.

At the beginning of the event, a representative of the group Cuba Yes presented the history and effects of the US blockade against Cuba and then two video messages were played from two Cubans who recounted their personal and professional experiences with the economic blockade.

A Cuban citizen who works as a sailor in Spain explained in particular the American disinformation campaigns that he observes from abroad in that country.

In addition, the Vice President of Information of Prensa Latina, Luisa María Gonzales, reported by video conference on the difficulty of press work due to the blockade. In particular, she explained the difficulties in making payments to correspondents abroad.

Heiner Fechner, Co-President of IALANA Germany, called unilateral punitive measures from a Marxist and postcolonial perspective and referred to the international legal framework.

Fechner argued that sanctions are a tool used by the global North to advance its own economic and political interests.

Moreover, unilateral sanctions, without a UN mandate, are always contrary to international law, Fechner said.
