Ecuador: 5-7-hour-long blackouts a day in December

Quito, Dec 2 (Prensa Latina) Ecuadorians welcomed December on Sunday with blackouts that will last at least five to seven hours a day during the first week of the month.

Rationing continues amid the population’s discontent, after President Daniel Noboa’s promise to end rationing by this date.

The Ministry of Energy and Mines justified the measure with the objective of “preserving the levels of the reservoirs and guaranteeing power supply in the country.”

In Quito’s case, the cuts will be suspended on December 6 (Friday) to celebrate the city’s 490th anniversary.

These recent statements have generated unrest in the population and criticism of the Government, in particular, the president who assured that in December “we will return to having a normal life.”

Users on social networks insisted that once again Noboa “lied again.”

Experts had warned that it would be very difficult not to have blackouts in December due to the conditions of the power system, as practically no rains have been reported and no new thermal energy contracts have been signed.

The new promise from the Ministry of Energy is to work in a “committed and uninterrupted” way to improve the conditions of the electrical infrastructure “in order to suspend energy rationing by the end of 2024.”

Since September 23, 2024, Ecuador has faced long power outages that have reached up to 14 hours a day during a dry season, and questions to the Government for the lack of timely measures to face the situation.
