According to the new decision of the Electoral Commission of Namibia (CEN), polling stations will be open until the evening of Saturday, November 30 to ensure that all registered voters have the opportunity to exercise their right to vote.

The request was submitted to Namibia’s president, Nangolo Mbumba, to allow the continuation of elections at some specific polling stations, it said. The authorities also reported that the elections are taking place amid peaceful behavior of the population, reflecting the democratic spirit envisaged in the Constitution.

They also reported there were some problems due to overheating of the tablets used for voting, as well as complaints from the population about the slowness and shortage of ballots.

About 1.4 million people, out of a total population of more than 3 million, are registered to decide the future of Namibia in the southern cone of Africa, among 15 candidates running for different political groups, including Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, current vice-president and candidate of the ruling South West Africa People’s Organization Party (Swapo).
