The Higher Institute of Health (ISS), based on data collected in 2023, notes that in that year there were 2,349 diagnoses of HIV and 532 of AIDS, figures that represent an increase over the previous year, but lower than those of 2019 when 2,510 infections and 647 serious illnesses were detected.

They added, that this path, which coincides with the trend of significant increases in other sexually transmitted infections among young people, indicates and suggests the need to promote greater awareness of both prevention standards and access to diagnostic tests.
The three cities with the highest cases are Rome, Milan and Bologna. The region with the lowest incidence is Veneto, with 1,1 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Trentino, with 1,8. The main route of transmission remains sexual, outstanding among homosexuals (HSM), with 38,6% of the desease.
