A day after his victory, Lula congratulated Orsi by phone and confirmed a visit to Brazil to participate in the summit of the Common Market of the South (Mercosur) on December 6th. Also, during the conversation, Lulda da Silva sent a hug to former president José “Pepe” Mujica and described the election of the presidential standard-bearer of the Frente Amplio as a victory for all of Latin America and the Caribbean.

On social media, da Silva said that “Brazil and Uruguay will continue working together in Mercosur (Common Market of the South) and other forums for fair and sustainable development, for peace and in favor of regional integration.”

During his victory speech, Orsi promised thousands of supporters that he will govern for everyone in Uruguay and would be open to listening to those who lost in the vote. “There will be no room for insults or disqualification, the country of solidarity and respect for others has triumphed,” he said.

The Brazilian government considers the election of Orsi strategic for alliance enhancement in the region. The elected president should adopt positions aligned with Brazil´s on issues such as social policies and human rights, in which there are divergences with the Argentine ruler, Javier Milei, who has a critical approach towards Mercosur.

In a recent interview, the new head of the Uruguayan Executive stated that Brazil and Argentina will be priorities in his foreign policy. He also intends to dialogue with Milei during the Mercosur summit, reinforcing his intention to keep the regional bloc cohesive.

Official media in Uruguay indicated that Orsi should take office on March 1st and receive the economy with a growth of 3.2 percent, the forecast for this year, according to the International Monetary Fund.
