Sheinbaum: Mexico’s position is to build bridges, not closing borders

Mexico City, Nov 28 (Prensa Latina) President Claudia Sheinbaum reiterated that Mexico's position is not to close borders, but to build bridges between governments and between peoples.

The dignitary wrote in X that in the talk held this Wednesday with president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, she explained the comprehensive strategy that Mexico has followed to address the migration phenomenon, respecting human rights. “Thanks to this, migrants and caravans are attended to before they reach the border. We reiterate that Mexico’s position is not to close borders but to build bridges between governments and between peoples,” she emphasized.

The statements took place after a message from Trump on Truth Social, in which he said that Sheinbaum agreed to “stop” migration by “effectively closing” the border between both countries.

Previously, in another message on X, Sheinbaum mentioned that both spoke of “strengthening collaboration on security issues within the framework of our sovereignty and the campaign we are carrying out in the country to prevent the consumption of fentanyl.”

Trump promised last Monday to raise tariffs on products from Mexico, Canada and China from the first day of his government, in retaliation for illegal immigration and “crime and drugs,” he said.

In a letter to Trump made public on Wednesday, Sheinbaum considered that threats and tariffs will not solve the migratory phenomenon and drug consumption in the US, and indicated that “cooperation and mutual understanding are required for these great challenges.” She also warned that “one tariff will be followed by another in response, and so on, until we put common companies at risk.”

According to estimates released Wednesday by Mexico’s Ministry of Economy, the United States would lose some 400,000 jobs and its growth would decline if the tariff increase announced by Trump were to be applied.
