“Sad news come with the death of Pedro Martínez Pírez, a recipient of the José Martí National Journalism Award, and the Cuban Radio Honorary Award, during a life he devoted to defending Cuba from his post as a “combatant” of the airwaves and TV, as he described himself,” the president said on his Twitter account.
Speaker of the National People’s Power Assembly, Esteban Lazo, also resorted to X to express his deepest condolences and stressed that Martínez Pérez “left a mark of professionalism, dedication and service to Journalism and the Fatherland throughout his life.”
A native of the central province of Villa Clara, the prominent journalist was a founder and editor in chief of the magazine of the Latin American and Caribbean Continental Organization of Students (OCLAE) and from his early years became involved in the revolutionary struggle by joining the ranks of the July 26 Movement.
Martínez Pérez leaves a legacy of professionalism and service to the journalism and to Cuba in a number of media, in publications, radio, television and in the Prensa Latina Agency.
