Paraguay with law against racism towards afrodescendants

Asuncion, Nov 27 (Prensa Latina) Paraguay today has a new law establishing clear mechanisms to prevent and punish any kind of act of racism and discrimination against people of African descent, but at the same time promote equality among its citizens.

The regulation stipulates the implementation of a national human rights plan to be administered by the National Institute of Statistics to attend to and guarantee the full inclusion of this segment of the population, and the creation of a registry to count all individuals of this ethnic group.

It contemplates the incorporation of Afro-descendant history in the country’s educational programs, the implementation of sanctions against discriminatory acts and also initiatives to promote an environment of equality and respect.

The regulation of this law was made possible thanks to the work of various institutions in Paraguay and was coordinated by the National Secretariat of Culture.

In promulgating it, President Santiago Peña emphasized that it seeks to guarantee the full participation of Afro-descendants in the different public entities, to assert their rights and to include their legacy in Paraguay’s history.

“Our government is firmly committed to making the constitutional guarantee of equality a reality and to fight resolutely against racial discrimination in all its forms,” he said.
