“A Business Council that we have been forming for some time, coordinated by Altagracia Gómez, will be coming tomorrow, and the Secretary of the Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, will be coming,” said President Claudia Sheinbaum yesterday in her usual meeting with journalists.
Sheinbaum sent a letter to Trump considering that threats and tariffs will not resolve the migratory phenomenon and drug use in the US, and indicated that cooperation and mutual understanding are required in the face of these great challenges.
After making public the letter addressed to Trump, the president said that this Wednesday they will give information about what the increase in tariffs would mean for the United States, the impact it would have on the United States economy if tariffs were to be raised. “And in addition, we have been working for some time on what we call the Mexico Plan, the Shared Prosperity Plan; tomorrow there will be an advance and this will be presented next week at an event,” Sheinbaum explained.
In response to Trump’s statements about raising tariffs on products from Mexico, Canada and China, from the first day of his government, Sheinbaum warned that “one tariff will be followed by another in response, and so on, until we put common companies at risk.” She mentioned that among the main exporters from Mexico to the United States are the US companies General Motors and Ford Motor Company, she wondered why they should be taxed, and maintained that it is not acceptable and would cause inflation and job losses in both countries.
The president also emphasized the comprehensive policy of attention to migrants developed by Mexico, which reduced the flow by 75 percent from December 2023 to November of this year, according to figures from the Border Patrol and US Customs.
On Tuesday, Ebrard highlighted the president’s response to Trump’s threats and called for closing ranks with her. “Firm response from President Claudia Sheinbaum to President Donald Trump. Time to close ranks with her. The tariff is a tax and would harm both countries. We will find a solution. See you tomorrow, at the morning meeting with the people. Mexico will come out ahead, once again!!” he wrote on X.
