Honduras’ CSJ ratifies sentences in case of Berta Caceres’ murder

Tegucigalpa, Nov 27 (Prensa Latina) Honduras' Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ) reportedly declared null the appeals filed by the defense teams in the 2016 crime against environmentalist leader Berta Caceres.

A national television report stated that the sentence for murder in the case of Roberto David Castillo was confirmed.

Additionally, the appeals for defendants Elvin Heriberto Rapado, Oscar Haroldo Torres, Edison Atilio Duarte, and Henry Javier Hernandez were rejected and they were sentenced for murder and attempted murder.

The CSJ Criminal Chamber also rejected the appeals for Douglas Bustillo and Mariano Diaz Chavez, who were convicted of consummated murder.

The CSJ informed in a press release that the sentences had already been ratified and ordered the secretariat’s office to return the case to the original sentencing court to execute the sentence.

Berta Caceres was a Honduran (Lenca) indigenous leader, feminist, and environmental activist.

In March 2016, armed men shot and killed her for her opposition to the construction of the Agua Zarca hydroelectric dam at the Gualcarque River.
