Al-Sharif commented on the developments in Sudan and expressed his gratitude on behalf of the Sudanese people for the warm hospitality and support of Addis Ababa, in welcoming Sudanese citizens fleeing the conflict, the local Foreign Ministry reported.
Gedion, in turn, reaffirmed solidarity with Sudan, expressing that “it is our duty as neighbors to welcome our Sudanese brothers.” He also stressed Ethiopia’s commitment to supporting a peaceful resolution of the ongoing conflict in Sudan, in a manner that respects the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He emphasized on the importance of direct dialogue and accountability on mutual concerns, including negotiations on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
Both sides agreed on the need for regular bilateral political consultations to strengthen ties, promote peace and stability, and advance regional economic integration.
Clashes in Sudan erupted on April 15th, 2023 over contradictions amid an integration process of the Rapid Support Forces led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, Vice President of the Transitional Sovereign Council (TSC); and the head of the Army and Chairman of the TSC, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, both with the rank of general.
Dagalo and Al-Burhan have been contending for control of the country after the 2019 overthrow of President Omar al-Bashir.
