Dead people reported in Indonesia by avalanches and flash floods

Jakarta, Nov 25 (Prensa Latina) Torrential rains on the Indonesian island of Sumatra caused flash floods and landslides whose balance today amounts to 16 dead and six missing, according to authorities.

On Monday, rescuers continue to search for missing persons under mud, rocks, and fallen trees after heavy rainfall over the weekend caused rivers to overflow and landslides in four mountainous districts of North Sumatra province.

Villages, several houses, and farms have been swept away, forcing rescuers and police to use everything from bulldozers and farm equipment to their bare hands to search through the rubble for survivors.

According to the local disaster management agency, the flash floods damaged hundreds of houses and buildings in villages in South Tapanuli district, as well as more than 130 hectares of farmland and plantations.

While dozens of injured people are receiving medical care, several Indonesians are still searching for their relatives in a difficult situation as the landslides and flash floods also affected the communication infrastructure.
