It will be a second round and there will be two ballots: one in the name of Yamandú Orsi and Carolina Cosse for the opposition Frente Amplio; and the other for the ruling coalition of Álvaro Delgado and Valeria Ripoll.
One of the first citizens to vote was former President José Mujica, who is recovering from the after-effects of a radiotherapy treatment against esophageal cancer.
Mujica arrived at his polling station, in the capital municipality of Cerro, before 08:00, the time scheduled for the beginning of the election day.
On October 27, the date of the first round, the president arrived at the polls in a wheelchair. Today he did so with the help of a walking stick, visibly recovered.
After casting his vote, Mujica, speaking to the press, said: “Uruguay is a small country that has earned recognition for its stability, which we all have to take care of together”.
He pointed out that the next government will have to negotiate with other political forces.
“I am alive by miracle,” he said in reference to his health. “I am worried about you, I am worried about the future”. Mujica also noted that the country needs to invest in knowledge.
