Gómez, 75, wore the catcher’s gear for eight seasons between the late 1960s and early 1970s, and accompanied the work of excellent pitchers like right-handers José Antonio Huelga and Aquino Abreu, and left-handers Leonel García and Aniceto Montes de Oca.
He started playing baseball in the so-called Cubanitos, the youth and under-23 series, and represented Cuba in a friendly tournament in Mexico in 1968, among others.
He accomplished a charitable mission as a baseball coach in Brazil and Venezuela and was a sports trainer for more than 30 years in Sagua la Grande in all baseball and softball categories.
José Gómez’s daughter, Anny Gómez, an award-winning radio and television announcer from Villa Clara, died of cancer on Wednesday.
