Spaniards complete solidarity shipment for Cuba

Madrid, Nov 21 (Prensa Latina) Various groups from the Basque Country on Thursday completed a solidarity shipment for Cuba, consisting of medical equipment and supplies mainly.

The cargo also contains work clothes and consumable supplies, worth some half a million euros and collected in the town of Santurtzi, in northern Spain.

The shipment is made possible thanks to the joint work of the associations that make up FACRE “José Martí” (groups of Cuban residents in Spain), including Euskal Herria, Sierra Maestra-Euskadi and Desembarco del Granma, in addition to the Euskadi-Cuba Friendship Association.

Most of the equipment was donated by the Basque Government’s Department of Health, from the Gurutzeta-Cruces and San Eloy hospitals, both in the municipality of Barakaldo (Bizkaia).

Other containers will be prepared by the FACRE “José Martí” soon, which also prepares shipments by air regularly.

The organizers recalled that “Cuba is going through an emergency situation, after being hit recently by two hurricanes and several earthquakes, which have destroyed tens of thousands of homes, caused serious damage to agriculture and infrastructure, and made the power system collapse.”

In this regard, they stressed that these phenomena occur in a country that, in addition, “is under an economic, financial and commercial blockade by the Government of the United States, condemned in the United Nations General Assembly (…)”.

From Basque lands, economic donations are also being collected in a bank account to send more humanitarian aid in the coming months.

Besides, the MESC (State Movement of Solidarity with Cuba) has opened several accounts for the same purpose.
