The general strike will be an inevitable choice. The fight of the railway workers to ensure the safety of citizens and trains, as well as the recognition of their fair work is justified, the union representatives said at a press conference outside Seoul Station.
The strike plan is expected to affect operations of KTX high-speed train services and regular trains across the country, as well as subway services in the Seoul metropolitan area, which includes the surrounding Gyeonggi province.
The strike would cause massive disruptions nationwide, as unionized workers at Seoul Metro, the operator of subway services in the South Korean capital, announced last Tuesday another plan to hold a general strike from Dec. 6.
The KRWU has been staging a partial strike since Monday, causing delays to metro services and commuter trains in the capital area.
For its part, the Korea Railway Corporation reported that all KTX and regular trains ran normally during the day, and warned that any violation of company rules or the law by striking workers will be dealt with strictly.
