South African regional body favors solution to dispute in Mozambique

Zimbabwe, Nov 21 (Prensa Latina) The extraordinary summit of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in a statement circulated today supported a negotiated solution to the crisis provoked in Mozambique by a failed presidential candidate. The Mozambican presidential elections of last October were won by Daniel Chapo, candidate of the Frelimo Party, but Venancio Mondlane, candidate of the Podemos coalition alleges that the consultation was fraudulent and called his supporters to street protests which resulted in five deaths according to official data, and 30 according to the opposition.

The summit meeting was convened to examine the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the most tangible result is the extension for another year of the mandate of the military mission of five thousand troops deployed in that country, three thousand from South Africa, one thousand from Tanzania and an equal number from Malawi.

SADC was created in 1980, after the proclamation of the independence of the Portuguese African colonies and the collapse of the apartheid system in South Africa, and adopted its current name in 1992, its headquarters are in Gaberone, the capital of Botswana, and it is composed of 16 members.
