Díaz-Canel assesses local development in western Cuban province

Havana, Nov 21 (Prensa Latina) Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel resumed his tours of the country's territories on Thursday in the municipality of Los Palacios, in Pinar del Río, with the aim of promoting local development.

Accompanied by the secretary of Organization of the Communist Party of Cuba, Roberto Morales, the head of State visited the Base Business Unit Semillas Cubanacán, which belongs to the Los Palacios Grain Company, the Presidency of the Republic reported on its official X account.

The company, an investment project with a Vietnamese firm that exploits the potential of the Los Palacios Rice Complex, plans to sow 1,000 hectares and expects to harvest some 300 by the end of 2024.

“This is one of the country’s priority projects, which will provide us with food sovereignty,” said the president during a meeting with executives of the rice company and María Thom, leader of the project on the Vietnamese side, in which 10 people work.

Díaz-Canel also visited the Santa Mónica community, located in areas of the Abel Santamaría cooperative farm, and where some 450 inhabitants reside.

The president also met with students from the Clara Zatkin multi-grade primary school, which he praised for its excellent conditions.

For several minutes he talked with the students about their future aspirations, and told them about his most recent meeting with a group of children and adolescents at the Palace of the Revolution, on the occasion of World Children’s Day.

As part of his tours of Los Palacios, the president met with producer Onay Martínez, at the Tierra Brava agrotourism farm, which belongs to the Niceto Pérez cooperative farm.

The farm applies science, in connection with research centers, to produce fruit trees mainly and is the only one in the country that has been declared under sustainable land management.

After learning about the practices of the company, Díaz-Canel said, “This is the thinking and agriculture that we need.”
