Brazil’s Police accuse Bolsonaro and others of attempted coup

Brasilia, Nov 21 (Prensa Latina) The Federal Police (PF) of Brazil today accused former President Jair Bolsonaro and 36 other people of alleged crimes to violently abolish the Democratic Rule of Law, coup d'état and criminal conspiracy.

The 884-page investigation report was forwarded to the Supreme Federal Court (STF).

Among the accused is former General Walter Braga Neto, ex Minister of Defense (2021-2022),

This is the first time former president Bolsonaro faces accusations of being responsible for conspiring against democracy in the country. The Police, who also sent the document to Bolsonaro’s defense lawyer, Braga Netto, and the leader of the Liberal Party, Valdemar Costa Neto indicate the alleged conspirators had organized themselves into several cells, according to their tasks. This helped investigators learn about individual responsibilities.

One group was in charge of spreading misinformation and attacking the electoral system; another was tasked with “inciting military personnel to join the coup d’état.”

There was also a “legal core”, to support pro coup actions, one for the parallel intelligence and a third one to promote coercive measures.

As the next step, the Police must forward the report to the Attorney General’s Office, which would the proceed to assess the information and decide whether or not to file charges against those involved, something the Attorney General, Paulo Gonet, is not likely to do until next year.

The delay will largely obey to the case’s complexity.

The police accusation is based to a good extent on testimonies given by Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid, former assistant to Bolsonaro, who did so in exchange for a lenient treatment.

Commanders of the Army and the Air Force in the Bolsonaro Government (2019-2022) told the PF that the he had presented them with the coup project, with only then commander of the Navy, Almir Garnier, accepting his plans.
