Violence in Haiti endangers pharmaceutical sector

Port-au-Prince, Nov 20 (Prensa Latina) The Haitian American Pharmacist Association (HAPA) warned that if the spiral of violence in the country continues, it will be impossible to guarantee the products that hospitals, polyclinics, and pharmacies currently need.

HAPA President Pierre Hugues explained that the clashes will prevent warehouses from supplying healthcare centers, affecting thousands of patients.

Quoted by the Haiti Libre digital newspaper, Hugues recalled that the Caribbean nation depends on imports for nearly 70 percent of its pharmaceutical needs, and the total closure of ports and airports further complicates external supplies.

Hugues, in a similar situation in April, stressed that “of 216 laboratories that officially supply pharmacies in Haiti, only three are located in the country, the 213 others are abroad. If they do not find a way to send medicines to Haiti, the agencies could not supply the pharmacies.

Hugues condemned that gangs burned down more than a dozen pharmacies in Port-au-Prince in March.
