US House Ethics Committee may meet on Gaetz report

Washington, Nov 20 (Prensa Latina) The US House of Representatives Ethics Committee will discuss Wednesday its report on former Republican Matt Gaetz, who President-elect Donald Trump nominated for attorney general.

The House panel has been investigating Gaetz since 2021 for sexual misconduct with a 17-year-old minor, illegal drug use, and accepting improper gifts.

However, the Committee no longer has jurisdiction after Gaetz resigned from his role in the Lower House following Trump’s controversial appointment, but the calls to release the investigative report, which is opposed by House Speaker Mike Johnson, are growing.

Releasing the report “would open a Pandora’s box,” Johnson said on Capitol Hill on Friday.

The Committee obtained records, including a check and proof of payment from Venmo, that show the then-Florida representative paid more than 10,000 dollars between 2017 and 2019 to two women who later became witnesses in sexual misconduct investigations, ABC News reported.

The Ethics Committee expects to vote this Wednesday on whether or not to release its report on Gaetz, although the investigation ended when the politician resigned from the Lower Chamber.
