UN calls for safe access in Haiti to deliver humanitarian aid

Port-au-Prince, Nov 20 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations Organization (UN) called for the guarantee of safe and permanent access for the delivery of humanitarian aid in Haiti, a Caribbean nation today plunged into chaos due to gang violence.

The international organization – quoted by the digital newspaper Haiti Libre – demanded an end to the escalation in order to provide unhindered aid to the population suffering from the deteriorating security situation and the worsening crisis.

UN agencies recently suspended humanitarian aid in Haiti due to the violence.

This decision was in response to the impossibility of access to the capital’s port and airport, the latter being closed as it was last March.

The pause in airport operations came against the backdrop of an attack on a U.S. Spirit Airlines aircraft just as it was making its landing maneuver.

The gang members with their automatic weapons hit the fuselage with several projectiles, one of them wounding a flight attendant. The pilots reacted, lifted the aircraft and landed in the neighboring Dominican Republic.

Access to the port is also difficult due to road closures, many of them taken over by criminal gangs.

Port-au-Prince, Nov 20 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations has called for guaranteed safe and permanent access to humanitarian aid delivery in Haiti, a nation currently engulfed in chaos due to gang violence.

Haiti Libre reported that the UN urged for an end to the escalating violence to ensure unhindered assistance to the population affected by the deteriorating security situation and worsening crisis.

Recently, UN agencies suspended humanitarian aid in Haiti due to the violence, which has made access impossible to the capital’s port and airport which has been closed since March. This closure followed an attack on a U.S. Spirit Airlines aircraft during its landing, where gang members fired automatic weapons at the fuselage, injuring a flight attendant.

The pilots managed to divert the plane and land in the Dominican Republic. Access to the port is also severely restricted due to road closures controlled by criminal gangs.
