Russia boosts troop deployment near occupied Golan Heights

Damascus, Nov 18 (Prensa Latina) Russia has increased the number of its troops operating in Syria since September 2015, with a fresh deployment in the southwestern provinces of Deraa and Quneitra, near the line separating the country from Israel-occupied Golan Heights.

Senior Syrian and Russian officers denied some media reports about the reduction of Russian personnel in this area, saying that, contrary to rumors, the military contingent was reinforced by installing watch towers.

Deputy commander of the Russian troops in Syria, General Alexander Rodionov, told the press that his troops have coordinated with Syrian military to establish nine surveillance positions to perform air and land reconnaissance.

In the eyes of senior Syrian commanders, the deployment of Russian military police units helps improve stability and security.

Our bilateral coordination and exchanges of information and experiences strengthen security and pave the way for people to return to their lands and resume their normal lives after getting rid from terrorism, said the officers, quoted by SANA state agency.

The deployment of the Russian military included Tal Al-Ahmar and Tal Al-Hara mountains, where Syrian air defense units are located.
