Milei at G20 Summit in Brazil could hinder final declaration

Brasilia, Nov 18 (Prensa Latina) Argentine President Javier Milei's presence and stance could hinder the Final Declaration of the G20 Leaders' Summit, underway in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro through Tuesday.

Political analysts and journalistic media warn that Milei’s stance against the United Nations Agenda 2030 and other multilateral proposals is to create tensions with President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Milei has voiced his opposition to issues such as gender equality, global taxation of the super-rich, and energy transition goals, all of which are essential to Lula’s agenda.

The Poder360 website points out that the Summit of the world’s 19 largest economies, the European Union, and the African Union began at a standstill over the feasibility of adopting a Final Declaration by consensus.

Argentina opposed several issues under discussion and if it does not give in, it runs the risk of bringing down the document, which would be a diplomatic failure for the bloc, especially Brazil, which presides over the group until late November, the website added.

After rounds of ministerial meetings where, for the first time in two and a half years, documents were approved with all members’ consent, there were expectations for a calmer final declaration.

Although Milei, leader of the far-right La Libertad Avanza (Liberty Advances-LLA) party, had been pointing out disagreements for some time, Buenos Aires’ stance has hardened in recent weeks, the website notes.
