Lula rules out wars in G20 summit discussions

Brasilia, Nov 18 (Prensa Latina) Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva ruled out the issue of armed conflicts and wars as the central theme of the discussions at the G20 Leaders' Summit that begins today in Rio de Janeiro.

During an interview with Globonews television station, Lula specified that his choice was guided by a strategic vision aimed at the needs of the most vulnerable, instead of focusing attention on global warlike confrontations.

“I think I made sure not to bring the war to the G20 because otherwise we would not be discussing other things that are important for the people who are not at war, who are the poor people, who are the invisible ones in the world that people often do not see,” he pointed out.

He emphasized that the priority of his agenda is aimed at issues such as hunger, racial and gender inequality, in addition to other social challenges that affect billions of people around the world.

For the progressive leader, the debate on wars, while relevant, should not overshadow the needs of the most disadvantaged.

“These are the people who are hungry, the people who are despised, the victims of racial inequality, the women who are victims of gender politics. That’s why I’ve made a point of bringing these issues instead of bringing wars,” he explained.

Although he avoided focusing on armed conflicts in the discussions, Lula reaffirmed Brazil’s and the G20’s commitment to the pursuit of peace in regions of conflict.

“We are going to give a recommendation that we want peace in the Gaza Strip, we want peace in Lebanon, peace in Ukraine and we want to put an end to all wars,” he remarked.

The president also drew attention to the global economic impact of armed conflicts.
