In a statement, the agency added that it is focusing its efforts on the early rehabilitation of local production of short-cycle crops, the recovery of sheep and goats and fishery production, as well as the livelihood of workers in the agricultural, livestock, agro-forestry and fishery sectors.

This initiative will benefit more than 140,000 inhabitants of the municipalities of San Antonio del Sur, Imías, Maisí and Baracoa, in Cuba’s easternmost province.

With a total financing of US$680,000, including own resources and support from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), the territory will benefit from seeds, irrigation systems, solar panel pumps, roofs, laying trays, inputs for crop houses and agricultural tools.

In addition, 6,850 farmers will receive training on good agricultural practices and efficient soil, water and energy management, especially in emergency situations.

Local measures will also be implemented in the agro-forestry sector to support coffee, cocoa and coconut growers, and agro-forestry reforestation activities will be carried out.

It will also contribute to the rehabilitation of facilities related to small livestock (sheep and goats), which will directly benefit 1,629 people in 24 production units, improving local production of animal protein. FAO will contribute to the recovery of the livelihood of workers in the fishing sector, through the rehabilitation of seafood processing capacities in the Baramar Base Business Unit, as well as in the fishing bases associated with the Pescaguan company in Baracoa.
