Díaz-Canel praises values of Latin American School of Medicine

Havana, Nov 15 (Prensa Latina) Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel praised the values of humanism and solidarity in the educational work of the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM), which celebrating its 25th anniversary on Friday.

In a video message on his X account, the president expressed his admiration for the students who graduated from that institution.

“Whenever I hear from you, from what you have achieved in your communities and countries, especially in supporting the most disadvantaged, I think with deep emotion of Fidel, how happy he would be to see you become guardians of the life and health of your people,” he said.

Díaz-Canel sent his greetings to the representatives of the 20 ELAM graduates who have been celebrating the first congress of graduates from that school in Cuba since November 13, and also acknowledged that the doctors trained there “are a concrete expression that a better world is possible if we fight tirelessly for that ideal.”

“ELAM also renews and strengthens the profound universal vocation of the Cuban Revolution, by adding US and African students to its Latin American and Caribbean students,” the president pointed out.

On the other hand, he noted that ELAM has graduated 31,180 doctors from 122 countries, with representation in all regions of the world: 2,534 from Africa, 26,233 from the Americas, 2,165 from Asia, 7 from Europe and 241 from Oceania.

Currently, 1,877 students from 100 countries are enrolled in all years of the Medicine degree, in both Havana and in the rest of the country.

“An important milestone in recent years was the offering of 1,000 places for students from Colombia, from all sectors of that country, as a contribution from Cuba to the peace process after the agreements, of which our nation is guarantor, were signed, and the first graduation of these young Colombians is taking place this year,” Díaz-Canel added.

The 1st International Congress of ELAM Graduates concluded here on Friday after three days during which representatives of 20 graduations discussed topics such as primary health care, emergencies, natural disasters and pedagogy in Higher Medical Education, among others.
