Ecuador’s capital starts water rationing in face of drought

Quito, Nov 13 (Prensa Latina) The mayor of the Ecuadorian capital, Pabel Muñoz, reported that from today water rationing begins in Quito due to the low reserves of the supply systems amid the drought.

While the mayor acknowledged that the reservoirs intended for these purposes are still above the minimum level, he stressed the need to take preventive measures so that it may not happen as with the extensive electricity blackouts.

Muñoz called on citizens to launch a “big campaign to reduce water consumption.”

The mayor explained that the strong drought facing the region, adds an excessive consumption of water in the capital city, because while the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the use of 100 liters per day per person, here averages 146 liters in 24 hours, which amounts to a waste of 133 million liters of water daily.

In that context, a group of neighborhoods will receive cuts on alternate days and others will have a decrease in pumping pressure.

In high areas of the city of Cuenca, the capital of the province of Azuay, hosting the XXIX Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government, rationing is also being applied after 124 days of hydrological drought.
