Cuban central province to increase tobacco production

Sancti Spiritus, Cuba, Nov 13 (Prensa Latina) This central province, one of the most developed agricultural and livestock provinces in the country, is currently engaged in one of its star productions, the planting and collection of dark tobacco and the development of tapado.

In conversation with vegueros of the municipality of Cabaiguan, the one with the greatest potential and with a long experience inherited by generation of the Canary emigration of the 18th and 19th centuries, Prensa Latina seeks to shake off delays and non-compliances in the last few years.

Harvesters in Sancti Spíritus, the second largest leaf producers in the country, are taking advantage of the good weather and the humidity left by the rains of the Rafael storm to plant 1,500 hectares in the current 2024-2025 campaign.

According to the directors of the Company of collection and processing, this program is to harvest 1,200 hectares of sun stick (black of the Burley family) for clients abroad, national cigars and the production of cigarettes.

And another 270 and some hectares more of the tapado destined to the obtaining of layers for the twisted one of exportation, this would represent about two thousand tons of the leaf.

Specialists in the sector confirmed to Prensa Latina that the contracts signed are below the aspirations, leaving as alternatives to seek greater efficiency and achieve an agricultural yield of 1.36 tons per hectare.

It was informed that during this year it was possible to involve long-time operators capable of exceeding the programmed figures due to their experience and infrastructure conditions.

The nearly 1,000 veguero farmers of Sancti Spiritus are working to conclude the sowing of 70 percent of the campaign this month, the optimum time to achieve agricultural yields and start cutting the buds in March next year.
