Spain underscores need to counter climate change

Madrid, Nov 12 (Prensa Latina) Spain underscored on Tuesday the importance of fighting climate change, citing as a case in point the tragedy unleashed in Valencia by recent floods.

The President of Government, Pedro Sanchez, spoke this Tuesday during the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), in Baku, Azerbaijan, current venue for the event.

“Keep the commitment you made to humanity seven years ago, when we signed the Paris Agreement!”, Sanchez asked the world’s leaders attending the COP29 plenary session.

He emphasized that Spain is suffering the devastating effects of increasingly frequent extreme weather events, making it essential to redouble efforts in this crusade in the face of global warming.

“The only thing as important as helping the victims of this tragedy is to prevent it from happening again, and prevent natural disasters from repeating and multiplying,” Sanchez pointed out and recalled the DANA event that hit Valencia, Castilla-La Mancha, and Andalusia provinces.

The president of the Government explained that Spain reached its target of raising 1,4 billion euros in climate finance two years ahead of time.

In Spain, about 24,000 people die every year due to pollution, and heat waves caused more than 3,000 and 2,000 deaths in 2023 and 2024, respectively.

Sanchez noted that the effects of DANA in Valencia are the latest devastating example.
