According to a United Nations Cuba publication, the aid will arrive in eastern Santiago de Cuba starting from November 10, and is part of the United Nations Cuba’s Action Plan to support nearly half a million people affected by this weather event.
These are critical supplies that will support national efforts to improve the conditions of habitability, health, water, sanitation, and hygiene, through medicines, medical supplies, water storage tanks, hygiene kits, chlorine tablets, tarpaulins, mosquito nets, solar lamps, tool kits, among others, according to the source.
The contribution is in response to an agreement reached by five UN agencies (the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR; the Pan American Health Organization, PAHO; the World Health Organization, WHO; the United Nations Development Program, UNDP; the United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF) and the European Union, the source explains.
The supplies, valued at more than US$600,000, will arrive at their destination via four flights financed by the European Union, with logistical support from the United Nations Humanitarian Response Depot Network (UNHRD) managed by the World Food Program.
The United Nations System and the European Union are also talking with national authorities to evaluate joint efforts to respond to the serious impacts of Hurricane Oscar, and also to the devastating Hurricane Rafael in the western part of the country, the information states.
