In a communiqué, the MESC expressed its solidarity with Cuba after the passage of Hurricane Rafael two days ago, highlighting the damages on several provinces, especially Artemisa and Havana.
At the same time, it praised the “exemplary Cuban Civil Defence System, to guarantee the safety of the population and the current recovery process”.
It commented that although no deaths have been reported so far, the damage to homes, serious damage to agriculture, destruction of infrastructure and a strong impact on the electrical system.
He recalled that this is the second hurricane in a very short period of time, as just a fortnight ago, Hurricane Oscar hit the eastern part of the country and caused eight deaths, the note said.
Likewise, this Friday, the Euskadi-Cuba, Sierra Maestra-Euskadi and Desembarco del Granma associations joined in the expressions of solidarity with the Cuban people.
In similar terms to the text of the MESC, the groups focused on asking the people of the Basque Country to support the collection of funds to send humanitarian aid to the Caribbean island.
