Honduras intensifies campaign to combat cattle screwworm

Tegucigalpa, Nov 5 (Prensa Latina) Honduras intensifies the campaign to combat the cattle screwworm (GBG) through initiatives implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG) to counter the disease that now affects the country's southern region.

The SAG, through the National Service of Agri-Food Health and Quality (SENASA), is developing a campaign to fight the GBG, which, according to official data, have reported 25 cases in this capital.

National television informed that technicians and field workers are participating in the campaign with the support of the International Regional Organization for Agricultural Health (OIRSA) and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), among other public and private institutions.

Reports show a higher incidence of the disease in the departments bordering Nicaragua, such as Choluteca, El Paraiso, and Olancho; one case was detected in the Cortes department and another in Omoa, far from the border zone.

The SAG informed that Honduras, at regional level, ranks second with the lowest number of cattle screwworm cases, after Guatemala, which is first after recently registering one case. Panama has the highest incidence rate of the disease after reporting 19,970 GBG cases.
