COP16 meeting creates fund to share benefits of genetic resources

Cali, Colombia, Nov 2 (Prensa Latina) As a conclusion to a 12-hour debate, delegates at the United Nations Conference on Biodiversity (COP16) agreed here today to create the so-called Cali Fund, establishing payments for the use of digitalized genetic sequences.

One of the most important goals of this financial assistance is to guarantee access to the benefits deriving from the use of genetic information on biodiversity for the countries where data originate.

The forum’s participants agreed that industries such as pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, which are the ones that most use these DNA sequences to develop products, should contribute financially so that the supplier States can invest in protecting and preserving their biological diversity.

President of COP16 and Minister of Environment of Colombia, Susana Muhamad, publicized on her X account the plenary’s agreement to create the aforementioned global fund.

The related debate should have come to an end the day before, but it ultimately saw its sessions extended until this morning.

The deliberations of the COP16 took place at the Pacific Valley Convention Center, where the Blue Zone was set up, attended by more than 170 delegations and over 20, 000 visitors.
