El Salvador prioritizes disease prevention

San Salvador, Nov 1 (Prensa Latina) Salvadorian health authorities are currently focused on preventing diseases through immunization, the 35th National Pediatrics Congress and the 33rd National Neonatology Congress acknowledged.

Members of the El Salvador Pediatrics Association (ASOPEDES) highlighted the inclusion of vaccines in the public health system program, which, they said, prioritizes disease prevention.

Pediatrician Lourdes Dueñas, a member of ASOPEDES, pointed out that vaccines are the next most important public health measure after drinking water, due to their impact in reducing many diseases. Nearly 20 illnesses can be prevented through vaccination, she stated.

The Health Ministry has made substantial changes in the vaccination scheme over the last two years, by introducing the hexavalent vaccine, which protects locals against diseases, such as diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio, type B influenza, and hepatitis B.
