Peru’s envoy: Rejection of US blockade at UN is a sign it must end

Lima, Oct 31 (Prensa Latina) For Peru’s diplomacy, the almost unanimous rejection of the United States blockade on Cuba at the United Nations General Assembly proves that this policy must end, said the Peruvian envoy to the UN.

Diplomat Eder Rojas argued this way his country’s constant vote in favor of the resolution against the economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States, a stand that has been maintained for more than three decades by eight Peruvian governments of different political positions.

Rojas pointed out that almost the entire international community votes like this every year. Such consensus, he said, “is a clear sign that it is necessary to end this type of unilateral measures, so that Cuba can advance on its path of sustainable development.”

“Peru considers that the unilateral act of imposing a blockade is incompatible with international law, the principles of peaceful coexistence and the Charter of the United Nations,” he noted, adding that “it violates the norms of international law and the principles of cooperation between states.”

He cited the report by the UN Secretary General on the blockade, based on reports from specialized bodies of the world organization on the harmful effects of this policy on the Cuban people.

He mentioned reports from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights “that show the negative repercussions of the blockade on the rights of the Cuban population to health and education.”

“The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) found that the negative effects of the blockade have been increasing exponentially and are much more specific and much greater than in previous years, especially in commercial and financial activities,” Rojas recalled.
