Two of these units will be located in the so-called Northern macro zone, one from Arica and Parinacota to Tarapacá and the other from Antofagasta to Coquimbo, an area affected by a high incidence of crime.
One more will operate in the central zone, where the port of San Antonio in Valparaiso is located, which is considered one of the main non-traditional maritime drug trafficking routes to Europe and the United States.
This was stated in the United Nations report on drug trafficking for 2023.
A communiqué from the National Prosecutor’s Office of Chile informed that the remaining two offices will cover the Southern and Southern macro-zones.
The text specifies that the prosecutors designated to direct the work will coordinate the tasks with the Specialized Unit on Organized Crime and Drugs and the System of Criminal Analysis and Investigative Focuses.
They will also have the support of the offices against Money Laundering, Economic Crimes and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Unit, among others.
According to the document, in recent years, national and transnational criminal networks have used the ports to smuggle drugs and weapons.
In July of this year, 400 kilos of cocaine were seized at the maritime terminal in Algeciras, Spain, in a container bound for Chile.
