After over three decades, the 193-nation forum has maintained a firm and almost unanimous stance against that set of measures, whose total losses are estimated at 499 billion dollars over more than six decades of implementation.

“We have seen the overwhelming result at UNGA every year,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ spokesperson Stephane Dujarric acknowledged on Monday.

“Unfortunately, there has been no change in the situation and it continues to hurt the Cuban people,” Dujarric told reporters.

The most recent vote for the draft resolution held in November 2023 resulted in 187 votes in favor, two votes against (the United States and Israel), and the abstention of one member state (Ukraine).

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez on Wednesday described the siege as “an act of war in times of peace.”
