Cuban diplomat calls US blockade against Cuba an economic war

Managua, Oct 30 (Prensa Latina) The chargé d'affaires of the Cuban embassy in Nicaragua, Sergio González, said that the blockade policy imposed by the United States government against Cuba is an economic war.

In a conversation with Prensa Latina, the diplomat denounced that the blockade against Cuba is the longest in recent human history, and described it as an unjust, cruel, inhuman and illegal measure. “I want to emphasize this last aspect, because the serious difficulties that it obviously causes are generally mentioned because it is the most immediate, which directly impacts the well-being of the Cuban citizens, but the measure has no reason to exist, that is, it is not a valid argument, they are all pretexts that, in addition, have been changed over time,” he said.

González said that for over 30 years the vast majority of the member states of the United Nations have denounced the United States policy towards Cuba, however, successive US administrations persist in their obsession with subduing the Cuban people. “We are talking about the vast majority of the nations of the world, there are two countries that oppose the elimination of this framework of measures, which are the United States and, let’s say, its excremental appendix, which is the genocidal state of Israel,” he stressed.

The diplomat also referred to the extraterritorial nature of the blockade, which means establishing sanctions on third countries where subsidiaries of US companies are located and on ships that trade with Cuba. “It is one of the biases of illegality that this policy has and that is why we speak of a blockade, not an embargo, which affects the rest of the nations of the world, including the United States itself, the American citizens themselves,” he explained.

González recalled that in Cuba there is no sphere of the political, economic, cultural and social sphere that is not affected by the blockade, which has lasted more than six decades and was tightened during the administration of Donald Trump.

According to González, the blockade is the main obstacle to the normal development of the Cuban economy. He also recalled the refusal to US citizens to travel as tourists to Cuba, forcing them to submit to countless regulations and special permits, which currently also apply to European citizens.

The official added that now, more than ever, the secret memorandum of April 6th, 1960 by the Assistant Undersecretary for Inter-American Affairs, Lester D. Mallory, is made evident through a group of aggressive and coercive measures. Based on this, the central idea of the blockade is intended to isolate, suffocate and immobilize Cuba and create unrest among the Cuban population to weaken its decision to be sovereign and reduce support for the Revolution.

However, in the face of the milliards of dollars in damage caused by this policy, the Government and the people have the will and have taken action to counteract it, and they maintain the unwavering decision to continue the socialist project of national development, he said, and predicted a new victory for Cuba this Wednesday at the UN, when the draft resolution presented by Cuba to end the United States blockade will be put to voting once again.
