At the closure of the 10th Asia-Pacific Regional Meeting of Solidarity with Cuba, participants demanded the end of the blockade, the repeal of all unilateral sanctions and the removal of Cuba from the List of States Sponsors of Terrorism.
In statements to Prensa Latina, the president of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), Fernando González, thanked the region for its support, praised the event’s declaration, as well as the action plan of the organizations present for the next two years. “It is a document that is also being approved just when the debate is taking place in the United Nations about the resolution presented by Cuba, on the need to end the blockade and I believe that in this sense the international commitment to support Cuba is even more evident,” he said.
In González’s opinion, the delegates understood the complex circumstances that the island is going through, and they expressed their will to continue to stand with the Cuban people in defense of its sovereignty and against the coercive policies of the United States.
The declaration of the solidarity movement in Asia-Pacific highlighted the example that Cuba represents and urged the promotion of cooperation actions between organizations to increase support for the Cuban people in sectors such as health, education and food production, and calls for “fostering the work of friendship in the new generations, as faithful followers of the dreams of internationalism, collaboration and solidarity between peoples, highlighting the role of postgraduate education institutions in Cuba.”
In statements to Prensa Latina, Peter Weizel, who belongs to the solidarity movement with Cuba in Australia, said that Cuba is a beacon of hope for the Global South. “It’s not that you have to be like Cuba, but, like Cuba, you can claim your sovereignty and your self-respect. I think that’s what Cuba stands for, and I think that’s one of the things that stands out in this meeting, that people can go away thinking: yes, we can make a difference,” he added.
