Argentine unions carry out transport strike

Buenos Aires, Oct 30 (Prensa Latina) The member organizations of the National Transport Roundtable are carrying out a 24-hour strike to denounce the policies of the Argentine Government with the support of groups from other sectors.

In mid-September, several unions of the Argentine Confederation of Transport Workers and the General Union of Associations of that organization, decided to unite, declare a state of alert and carry out protests “with the objective of defending the labor rights that guarantee the non-precarious state of the activity.” In addition, they called for a strike to oppose the attempts to privatize Aerolíneas Argentinas, the layoffs in the national public administration and the strong adjustment implemented by the Executive of Javier Milei.

“Our axis is the defense of the sovereignty of the country that is represented in the national routes, trains, seas, rivers and skies, in the face of the daily abuse of the Government,” says a statement from the Roundtable.

The leader of the Truck Drivers’ Union and co-secretary of the General Confederation of Labour (CGT), Pablo Moyano, said that the strike will be forceful, and stated that Argentina is going through a very complex moment, due to measures such as attempts to close hospitals, the veto of the university financing law, mass layoffs and repression against retirees. He also criticised the sectors that are in dialogue with the Government and pointed out that it is necessary to debate the internal situation of the CGT.

The Argentine Workers’ Central (CTA) and the CTA-Autonomous stated that they support the strike, and will join in by holding soup kitchens in various parts of the country, including the Plaza de Constitución in the capital. The Union of Workers of the Popular Economy, the Piquetero Struggle Front and Territories in Struggle will also participate, denouncing the increase in poverty, indigence and hunger.

Students, teachers and non-teaching staff will also participate in the protests, with numerous initiatives in defense of public, free, federal and quality universities.

The State Workers Association began a 36-hour strike on Tuesday despite the strong police deployment. The members of the group will also backup the transport unions.
