Venezuela demands end to anachronistic blockade against Cuba at UN

United Nations, Oct 29 (Prensa Latina) Venezuela's permanent ambassador at the United Nations, Samuel Moncada, on Tuesday demanded an end to the United States blockade against Cuba, which he described as an anachronistic policy implemented for more than 60 years.

Speaking at the 28th plenary session of the UN General Assembly on the draft resolution presented by Cuba to end this monstrosity, the diplomat stated that the blockade, due to its extraterritoriality, affects any countries or institutions that maintain legal and sovereign economic, commercial or financial relations with Cuba.

“It is time to correct this historical injustice and to end an imperial delirium that imposes its national laws on the entire international community,” he said.

Moncada added that the international community recognizes the illegality of the blockade, which flagrantly violates all norms of international law and the UN Charter.

He pointed out that this policy of sanctions concentrates “the most unjust, severe and prolonged system of unilateral coercive measures” imposed on a country in modern history. In his opinion, he estimated that it is a collective and calculated punishment against more than 11 million Cubans who decided “not to yield to the blackmail and coercion of the U.S. regime.

The Bolivarian representative stressed that this is “a crime planned as part of a policy of maximum pressure,” which has its roots in the supremacist mentality of the Monroe Doctrine and continues to be enforced today, especially against the American continent.

He considered that the blockade is a mass violation of the Cuban people’s human rights, from which no family is exempt from its impact, which was palpable after the fall of its National Power System in recent days.

Referring to Cuba’s inclusion on what he called “an arbitrary unilateral list” by the US Government of countries that allegedly sponsor terrorism, Moncada emphasized that it is “a grotesque work of imperial propaganda.”

He pointed out that this step was taken without Washington having any basis and in reality “it manipulates a subject of such sensitivity only to increase the aggressions against the Cuban nation.”

Moncada stressed that everyone knows that Cuba has no connection with the sponsorship of terrorism, but “everyone is threatened to obey the orders of the US Government at the risk of economic coercion in their own territory.”

The real promoter and financier of terrorism is the US regime, “which we demand that end its double standards and once and for all exclude Cuba from a spurious list on which it should never have been included,” he stressed.
