Russian State Duma calls for an end to the blockade against Cuba

Moscow, Oct 29 (Prensa Latina) The State Duma (Lower House of the Russian Parliament) today approved an appeal to the UN General Assembly on the need to end the US blockade against Cuba.

The document, presented by the International Affairs Committee of the State Duma, is also addressed to the parliaments of the UN member states and other international parliamentary organizations, Prensa Latina announced Tuesday.

The call refers that for more than 60 years the economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba has directly violated the inalienable right of the Cuban people to choose an independent political, economic and socio-cultural system.

The deputies asserted that the coercive measures applied by Washington have a negative impact on the Cuban economy, in the areas of energy, agriculture, health, tourism and humanitarian cooperation. The Russian parliamentarians also pointed out that the embargo has a negative impact on the social sphere of the country, worsens the financial situation of millions of Cubans, obstructs the stable supply of food, fuel, medicines, thus harming the health and welfare of the people.

The appeal stresses that the US sanctions against the Caribbean nation have an extraterritorial character and are the main obstacle to the development of equal partnership relations with Havana by a number of states and international organizations.

In addition, Russia considers that the measures adopted by the United States unilaterally, bypassing UN resolutions, violate the legitimate rights and interests of Cuban citizens residing in other countries.

Last October 23, the Federation Council (the upper house of the Russian parliament) also approved a Declaration on the need to put an end to the economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba.
