Honduras highlights Cuba’s role in literacy program

Tegucigalpa, Oct 29 (Prensa Latina) Honduran Minister of Education, Daniel Esponda, highlighted here the key role played by Cuba today in his country's literacy program with the use of the "Yo, Sí Puedo" method.

The Cuban revolution continues to give lessons to the world, sending not weapons, but armies of teachers who have taught more than 30 countries to read and write,” Esponda said, at declaring a new department free of illiteracy.

Lempira became the third department free of illiteracy in Honduras thanks to the efforts of the government of President Xiomara Castro through the National Literacy Program ‘José Manuel Flores’ which uses the Cuban method.

Official data indicate that in this department a total of 43,708 people were taught to read and write, of whom more than 22,700 learned to read and write as part of the ‘José Manuel Flores’ program and 20,996 with alternative programs.

A report by TV Channel 8 stated that this Central American nation now has 223 municipalities free of illiteracy and a total of 343,219 people throughout the country who learned to read and write with the “Yes, I Can” method.

According to Esponda, at the beginning of her administration, the illiteracy rate here was around 11 percent; however, this level has been reduced under the leadership of President Castro, who is doing justice to the Honduran people.

The idea of the Executive is to declare the country as a territory free of illiteracy at the end of this year, for which the work developed by the 123 Cuban teachers in the area of counseling in all Honduran municipalities is highlighted. mh/abo/mem/ybv
